Visitors to Japan from January to September 2026 fell 2.9% year-on-year

The Japan National Tourism Organization released estimate data on October 21: foreign visitors to Japan from January to September 2026 totaled 30.7302 million, a decrease of 2.9% compared with the same period last year, the first year-on-year decline since 2021. Of these, visitors from mainland China numbered 3.3355 million, a decrease of 55.5%; South Korea ranked first with 8.2627 million, followed by Taiwan, China with 5.9976 million. Spending by foreign visitors to Japan during the same period reached 7.0574 trillion yen, up 1.9% year-on-year, a record high.
