FTC Asks Nine Airlines and Ride-Hailing Companies to Explain Pricing Methods
What the FTC Wants to Know About How Airlines Set Fares
On November 2, 2026, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) this week asked nine companies to provide detailed information in order to study the use of personal data in pricing and competition, involving Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Lyft, Uber, DoorDash, Instacart, Target and Walmart. The FTC said it will assess whether pricing or services differ between individuals due to factors such as loyalty program participation or super-intelligent algorithms' analysis of personal data. The nine companies must respond within 45 days of receiving the order. A November 5 report said the FTC is inquiring into how airlines set ticket prices, after Delta disclosed that it uses AI to price some tickets and JetBlue was sued over allegations it used personal data for pricing; the airline industry says it does not use personal data to determine ticket prices. There are currently no reports of any company publicly responding.
