Peru - Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

The U.S. Department of State reissued its Peru travel advisory after a periodic review, keeping the country at Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) due to crime, civil unrest, and kidnapping risk. The Colombia-Peru border area in the Loreto Region and the Valley of the Apurímac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM, including Vilcabamba) are Level 4 (Do Not Travel), as are some areas within Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica, and Junín. The city of Cusco and nearby tourist sites such as the Sacred Valley, the Inca Trail, and Machu Picchu are not in the affected area.
