U.S. September Vehicle Fuel Prices Rose Sharply Year-on-Year

On October 6, 2026, the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) released September 2026 vehicle fuel price data. The national average price of regular gasoline was $4.36/gallon, up 7.3% month-on-month and up 37.6% year-on-year. The average diesel price was $6.29/gallon, a record high, up 9.3% from the previous high in June 2022, up 15.2% month-on-month, and up 67.8% year-on-year. By region, gasoline prices were lowest along the Gulf Coast ($3.86) and highest on the West Coast ($5.54).
