    At the EESC plenary, the European Commission presented its Communication on 'A Simpler, Clearer and Better Enforced EU Rulebook', reporting twelve major Omnibus simplification proposals that could save at least €17 billion in annual administrative costs for European businesses and national administrations. Five pillars of action were set out: simplicity by design, a strengthened better-regulation system, regulatory deep cleaning, action against Member State gold-plating, and faster, more robust enforcement. Plans include simplification proposals for banking, housing and transport in 2027 and a proposal to accelerate permitting.

    European Commission Launches Alliance for the Reduction of Bureaucratic Burden

    European Commissioner Dombrovskis delivered a keynote speech in Brussels launching the Alliance for the Reduction of Bureaucratic Burden. The Commission has tabled twelve major Omnibus simplification proposals with the potential to save at least €17 billion in annual administrative costs for European businesses and national administrations. The Commission targets cutting administrative burdens by at least 25% for all companies and at least 35% for SMEs, with plans to deliver simplification proposals in banking, housing, transport and digital sectors in 2027.

    European Commission: Euro Area Economic Outlook and Competitiveness Agenda

    European Commissioner Dombrovskis, speaking at the Eurogroup press conference in Dublin, said energy-related disruptions and this summer's extreme weather events are expected to weigh on Europe's economy. The euro area economy performed somewhat better than expected in the first half of the year, but the Commission's latest assessment expects growth to slow next year. He highlighted three priority areas: safeguarding fiscal sustainability, strengthening the euro's international role and ensuring digital euro legislative negotiations cross the finish line by year-end, and enhancing competitiveness through full implementation of the EU competitiveness agenda.

    European Commission pushes Member States to stop gold-plating

    European Commissioner Dombrovskis addressed the European Parliament plenary on gold-plating, warning that when Member States add stricter or broader requirements while transposing EU law, it distorts competition, raises compliance costs especially for SMEs, and discourages cross-border activity. The Commission will work with Member States on better detection, follow-up and prevention, prepare a best-practice toolkit, and has circulated questionnaires to Member States and stakeholders.

    European Commission President Delivers 2026 State of the Union Address

    European Commission President von der Leyen delivered the 2026 State of the Union address in Strasbourg on 16 September 2026, outlining EU policy directions on security, economy, climate, technology and migration. She announced new initiatives including a European security strategy, a European Instrument for Strategic Enablers, a European Corporation on Critical Raw Materials, a Climate Insurance Alliance, a European Heatwave Plan, a European Water initiative, the EU KIDS Act and the Digital Fairness Act, while emphasising faster Single Market reform, administrative simplification, clean energy and AI development.

    European Commission Presents New Strategy and Regulatory Package for Outermost Regions

    On 10 September 2026, the European Commission presented a new Strategy for the EU's outermost regions, covering nine territories: French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, La Réunion, Saint-Martin, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands, home to more than 5 million people. The Strategy is built on four objectives: geostrategic potential and regional integration; competitiveness and better access to the Single Market; resilience and preparedness; and social fairness.     New EU rules to help local authorities tackle housing crisis

    The European Commission proposed the Affordable Housing Act to help Member States and cities address housing affordability and availability. It gives public authorities legal certainty to act within EU law, requiring measures such as short-term rental restrictions to be evidence-based, necessary and proportionate. Authorities must show short-term rental activity has had a significant adverse effect on affordability or availability for at least three years and that less restrictive measures would not be equally effective. The Act also covers second homes and prolonged vacancy, and is accompanied by a Recommendation to increase housing supply.
