    EU Commissioner Visits Moldova as Humanitarian Aid Shifts to Long-Term Inclusion

    EU Commissioner Lahbib made her first visit to Moldova, noting the country has taken in more than two million people since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and still hosts around 140,000 Ukrainian refugees. The EU has provided over €93 million in humanitarian aid since 2022, but with the Refugee Response Plan ending this year, support is shifting from emergency relief to long-term inclusion in national systems. Moldova also deployed around 50 firefighters to Greece and hosted Ukraine's aerial firefighting capacities.

    Moldova - Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

    The U.S. Department of State advises increased caution in Moldova due to the risk of unexploded ordnance (UXO). Some areas have higher risk, including central districts. Ongoing security threats related to Russia's war against Ukraine persist, and petty crime such as pickpocketing is common. Travelers should avoid crowds, be wary of fake police, and protect against ATM skimming.

    FCDO advises against all travel to parts of Moldova

    The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to parts of Moldova, including Transnistria, which is outside the control of the Moldovan government. There is widespread military activity in Ukraine, including close to some Moldovan borders, and the FCDO's ability to offer support is extremely limited. The Government of Moldova announced an energy state of emergency on 16 December 2024 linked to the cut-off of gas supplies on 1 January 2025, and managed power blackouts may occur. Travelling against FCDO advice could invalidate travel insurance.
