    EU Reaffirms Commitment to 1951 Refugee Convention on 75th Anniversary

    European Commissioner Lahbib issued a statement on behalf of EU Member States marking the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees, reaffirming the EU's commitment to the Convention's core values and to UNHCR as its primary guardian. The statement notes that the EU provides temporary protection to more than 4.8 million people fleeing Russia's war against Ukraine and leads humanitarian response from Sudan to Syria, Myanmar and beyond. It also outlines a route-based approach to identify vulnerabilities early, deliver fair and swift protection to those entitled to it, and prevent irregular migration.

    China Immigration Rolls Out Online Registration for Non-Hotel Foreigner Accommodation Nationwide

    China's National Immigration Administration issued Announcement No. 7 of 2026 on September 21, rolling out nationwide online registration for foreigner accommodation outside hotels. Under Article 39 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law, foreigners staying outside hotels must register with local public security authorities within 24 hours of check-in, by themselves or their host. Registration can be done online via the NIA government services website, the "NIA 12367" app, WeChat mini-program or Alipay mini-program. Offline channels remain available, and online registration has the same legal effect as in-person registration.

    China Records 499 Million Border Crossings in Jan-Aug, Visa-Free Entries Rise

    At the immigration management cooperation sub-forum of the 2026 Global Public Security Cooperation Forum (Lianyungang) held in Lianyungang, Jiangsu, on 10 September, it was reported that in January-August 2026, border inspection authorities processed 499 million border crossings, up 8.7% year on year. This included 242 million mainland residents, 196 million Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents, and 61.287 million foreigners, up 10%, 8.9% and 19.5% respectively.
