Industry coalition calls for EU Digital Omnibus to support biometrics

On 1 October 2026, ACI EUROPE, Amadeus, IATA, IDEMIA Public Security and SITA announced the formation of the Responsible Biometrics Travel Industry Coalition. According to messages published by IATA and Amadeus the same day, the coalition called on EU policymakers to ensure the Digital Omnibus supports voluntary and secure use of biometrics in travel, while protecting traveller choice and privacy. A message published by SITA the same day further stated that the coalition called on EU decision-makers to support voluntary, secure use of biometrics by travellers in the Digital Omnibus, while retaining non-biometric alternatives and privacy protections. On 7 October 2026, PhocusWire reported that five aviation and technology organisations — ACI Europe, IATA, SITA, Amadeus and Idemia Public Security — formed the Responsible Biometrics Travel Industry Coalition, calling on European policymakers to establish a clearer regulatory framework in the EU Digital Omnibus for expanded biometric deployment in air travel. On 8 October 2026, a Web in Travel roundup mentioned in its headline an airline coalition calling for relaxation of GDPR biometric restrictions, but the body text covered Fighters Sports & Entertainment and Iceland's Takanawa Travel-owned TripToJapan.com forming a capital and business alliance to promote inbound tourism to F Village, and did not provide further details of that call. Current progress remains at the stage of the coalition's formation and public call; the reports did not mention a response from the EU side or legislative progress on the bill.
