    EU and South Korea Sign MoU on IRIS² Secure Satellite Communications

    The European Commission signed an administrative arrangement with the Republic of Korea on IRIS², a multi-orbit constellation for secure communication. The EU decided last month to accelerate the system by expanding it to more than 350 satellites, adding capacity for defence, security and emergency services, with first satellites launching from 2029. Agreements were already signed with Norway and Iceland, and one with Ukraine will follow.

    China Tourism News republished a People's Daily report that some Chinese airlines are upgrading in-flight WiFi. China Eastern wide-body passengers can already enjoy smooth connectivity. Experts say in-flight WiFi meets airworthiness safety standards, with strict frequency and physical isolation between avionics and passenger WiFi. Two main connectivity paths exist: ground-to-air, which is cheaper and lower-latency but base-station dependent, and satellite, which offers wide coverage but higher latency. Chinese civil aviation mainly relies on high-orbit satellites while accelerating low-orbit constellation buildout.

    EU and Greenland Sign Joint Declaration with €200 Million Investment

    European Commission President von der Leyen visited Nuuk and signed a Joint Declaration with Greenland Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, deepening cooperation on youth opportunities, connectivity, civil protection and climate action. She announced a €200 million Global Gateway Partnership Package for this year and next, focused on connectivity, clean energy and critical raw materials. A new satellite project will immediately improve internet access for communities in northern Greenland, with remote eastern communities expected to benefit by October.
