Skift Forum: Premiumization Should Be Structural Strategy, Not a Product Upgrade

At Skift Global Forum, Air Canada Chief Commercial Officer Mark Galardo and ZS Managing Partner Kunal Shah said premiumization should be a structural company strategy rather than layered on top of existing operations. Galardo said premium revenue share at Air Canada grew from about 20% a decade ago to 30% today, with a target of 35% by end of decade. Shah said the industry too often equates premium with upscale, but midscale and economy properties can also capture value through pricing and personalization, and premium travelers prefer digital-first experiences. Galardo said premium demand is directly correlated to the health of the economy and strength of equity markets, and warned against…

EU Handed Out €430 Million in SAF Permits Last Year to 130 Airlines

The European Commission approved free EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) carbon allowances for 130 airlines to encourage sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) adoption, totaling €430 million ($494 million) last year — four times the roughly €100 million granted in 2024. Airlines claimed over 530,000 tonnes of SAF, cutting about 1.7 million tons of CO2. The support is part of a €1.5 billion pot earmarked for SAF adoption, which the Commission has proposed expanding further under its ETS reform. SAF costs three to 10 times more than traditional fossil-based kerosene.

Chinese Airlines Upgrade In-Flight WiFi: Ground-to-Air and Satellite Paths

China Tourism News republished a People's Daily report that some Chinese airlines are upgrading in-flight WiFi. China Eastern wide-body passengers can already enjoy smooth connectivity. Experts say in-flight WiFi meets airworthiness safety standards, with strict frequency and physical isolation between avionics and passenger WiFi. Two main connectivity paths exist: ground-to-air, which is cheaper and lower-latency but base-station dependent, and satellite, which offers wide coverage but higher latency. Chinese civil aviation mainly relies on high-orbit satellites while accelerating low-orbit constellation buildout.

Airlines Boost In-Flight WiFi: LEO Satellite Constellation to Deliver Ground-Level Experience

Recently, many passengers on China Eastern Airlines wide-body flights have enjoyed smooth internet service at 10,000 meters. A China Eastern expert said in-flight WiFi provided by major domestic airlines meets airworthiness safety standards, as modern civil aircraft avionics and passenger WiFi have strict frequency and physical isolation, and connecting after switching phones to airplane mode will not interfere with navigation or communication equipment. Aircraft connectivity mainly uses two technical paths: air-to-ground communication and satellite communication. Air-to-ground is mature, lower-cost, and lower-latency, with speeds close to ground 4G, but only works where ground base station…
