    UK Climate Advisers: Heathrow Expansion Incompatible With Net Zero Target

    The UK government's official climate adviser, the Climate Change Committee (CCC), said this week that Heathrow expansion is not currently compatible with the UK's Net Zero target. CCC chair Nigel Topping said emissions from flying are projected to rise even without expansion, and the UK lacks a credible plan to bring them down. If decarbonisation technology does not materialise, demand management — throttling passenger demand — could be the only route. Aviation accounts for about 2.5% of global carbon emissions.

    EASA: EU SAF supply reached 1.1 million tonnes in 2025, exceeding the 2% mandate

    EASA published its 2026 ReFuelEU Aviation Annual Technical Report on 17 September 2026. Aviation fuel suppliers reported 39.3 million tonnes of fuel at Union airports in 2025, of which 1.1 million tonnes (2.8%) was SAF, exceeding the 2% mandatory minimum applicable in 2025. SAF supply rose from 193,000 tonnes in 2024 to 1.1 million tonnes in 2025, nearly six times the previous volume. SAF was supplied at 121 Union airports across all 27 EU Member States, or 79% of Union airports, up from 33 airports in 2024.     The European Commission's DG MOVE reported on 17 September 2026 on EASA's annual report on ReFuelEU Aviation implementation. In 2025, the first compliance year, EU SAF supply significantly exceeded the 2% minimum: fuel suppliers reported 39.3 million tonnes of aviation fuel at Union airports, of which SAF accounted for 1.1 million tonnes (2.8%).     EASA Publishes First ReFuelEU Aviation Annual Technical Report: SAF Share 0.6% in 2024

    The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) published its first ReFuelEU Aviation Annual Technical Report. In 2024, fuel suppliers reported that 0.6% of aviation fuel supplied at EU airports was Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), equivalent to 193 kilotonnes, avoiding around 714 kilotonnes of CO2 emissions. The mandatory target for 2025 is 2%. The average SAF price in 2024 was €2,085/tonne, far above conventional jet fuel at €734/tonne. 25 fuel suppliers provided SAF to 33 airports across 12 Member States, but 5 Member States accounted for 99% of supply. Almost all SAF was biofuel, with 81% from used cooking oil.
