Expedia is cutting 58 roles in Seattle, according to a Washington WARN notice filed this week, with the layoffs set to take place between November 21 and December 1. The notice lists several senior roles, including an SVP position Skift previously reported in August, and of 31 total technical positions, 18 are in data science and machine learning. In a statement, Expedia characterized the cuts as streamlining efforts mainly related to finance, saying its Global Finance team is making changes mostly to simplify its org structure, with some employees moving to new roles or locations and some roles being eliminated.
Marriott International confirmed a strategic review of its Customer Engagement Centers with organizational changes being implemented to better reflect how guests interact across channels. Marriott did not confirm whether the changes will result in layoffs or how many employees are affected, but said new roles will be posted and many affected associates are expected to apply and be selected. The changes come roughly a year after a subset of Marriott's CEC workforce was impacted by organizational changes, and after the company laid off more than 800 corporate employees in 2024.
Uber is laying off 3,300 employees and cutting managerial roles by 20%, consolidating teams to prioritize ridesharing, delivery, and autonomous/robotaxi investments. The company says its product portfolio remains unchanged, but travel partnerships (Hopper, Expedia, Omio) may see reduced focus as resources shift. Remote work policy tightens: only about 1% of staff remain fully remote, with a three-day-a-week in-office mandate.
Hospitality technology company Mews announced a 15% reduction in its global workforce, approximately 170 roles, across all teams and geographies, with customer-facing roles largely unaffected. Founder Richard Valtr stated the company remains in a strong position and continues to grow, but AI is fundamentally changing the economics of hospitality, prompting proactive action. Mews aims to build an AI-native hospitality operating system and continues to hire for certain roles. The company previously raised $300 million in Series D funding at a $2.5 billion valuation.
