Singapore's Banyan Group Buys Newmark, Adding 26 Hotels in Africa

Singapore-listed Banyan Group agreed to acquire a 70% stake in Newmark Hotels & Reserves, a Cape Town-based operator of 26 hotels, lodges and private game reserves, with a path to full ownership over the next several years. According to a filing with the Singapore Exchange, the deal values Newmark at about 756 million South African rand, or $47 million. With Newmark, Banyan's portfolio grows by roughly a third to nearly 130 hotels, resorts and reserves across 14 brands in 28 countries. The purchase fits Banyan's "asset-right" strategy, a hybrid of owning some properties while managing others for third-party owners, adding fee income rather than bricks and giving Banyan a foothold in safari…

Etihad Airways CEO Antonoaldo Neves told Skift in an exclusive interview that Africa and China will be its biggest growth markets next year, but a widebody shortage limits how fast it can expand. He said "in the mid-term, aircraft is the constraint" and "we could have had 15 more widebodies today." Etihad has doubled its seats in three years and plans to keep adding capacity as it builds Abu Dhabi into a larger global connecting hub.

Skift Travel Health Index: Middle East Recovery Stalls Again

The Skift Travel Health Index stood at 99 in July, down 1% year-on-year. The Middle East and Africa fell back to 94 in July after recovering to the benchmark level of 100 in June. Skift attributes the reversal to renewed security concerns, travel advisories and flight suspensions, which weakened traveler confidence and made it difficult to convert interest into bookings. Vacation rentals was the only sector in the region to perform above the benchmark, gaining 14% year-on-year. Skift also reported this week on the potential lost year for Gulf tourism.

Healix: LGBTQ+ Travel Risks Worsen in Africa, Middle East

A Healix report warns of a worsening security environment for LGBTQ+ travelers in Africa and the Middle East, with new criminalizing laws. Senegal increased penalties for same-sex activity, and Ghana's president may sign a bill criminalizing LGBTQ+ identity. Repressive measures continue or intensify in MENA. Companies should ensure travel risk policies support LGBTQ+ employees, proactively providing resources rather than relying on disclosure.

Africa's Next Tourism Boom Will Be Won in the Mid-Market

Global travel demand remains resilient but is shifting toward value, exposing a 'missing middle' between budget and luxury that is especially acute in Africa. While Africa's hotel pipeline reached nearly 124,000 rooms in early 2026, growth is concentrated in upscale and luxury segments, leaving professionally managed mid-market supply badly underpenetrated. According to Millat Group CEO Hamza Farooqui and other industry leaders, the continent's core challenge is not demand—Africa was the world's fastest-growing tourism region in 2025 with international arrivals up 8% to 81 million, backed by a large, young, and growing middle class—but a 'broken architecture' of disconnected accommodations,…

U.S. State Department: Lesotho at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution

The U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 2 "Exercise Increased Caution" advisory for Lesotho, citing crime and health. Crime is common in Lesotho, with armed robberies and carjackings occurring from time to time, and local police may not have enough resources to respond quickly. Lesotho's health infrastructure is inadequate; health facilities, services, hygiene, and quality control do not meet U.S. standards of care, and pharmacies are neither well-regulated nor well stocked, with locally available medications potentially unsafe. Travelers have the option to enter South Africa for health services.

U.S. State Department Updates Senegal Travel Advisory: Level 1 Overall, Level 2 for Casamance

The U.S. Department of State updated the advisory summary for Senegal with no changes to the advisory level or risk indicators. The country remains at Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions), while the Casamance region is at Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) due to crime and landmines. U.S. embassy personnel may only travel in Casamance on main roads and during daylight hours. Separatist rebel groups operate in the region and bandits sometimes commit armed robbery; landmines and unexploded ordnance from prior conflicts exist primarily in border and rural areas, and their locations are often unknown, unmarked or hard to recognize.
