Skift and McKinsey's seventh annual research collaboration, based on a study of 1,000 consumers and traveler diaries, found the booking journey has transformed from a linear path to an orbit that expands, contracts, and continues well past the transaction. McKinsey partner Constantin said touch points from intention to booking grew from roughly 45 in 2018 to an estimated 65 now. More than 50% of travelers change their minds and rebook after the initial booking, with about 40% seeking better prices and 30% driven by fear of making the wrong choice. More than 70% of travelers use AI for research and comparison, but fewer than 16% are comfortable booking through an AI tool. IHG is rolling out…
Skift founder Rafat Ali argues that general-purpose personal AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are incorporating travel booking into their capabilities, posing a greater threat to the travel industry than dedicated AI travel products. These assistants can directly access emails, calendars, and more, simplifying trip planning and booking, potentially disrupting traditional OTAs and TMCs.
Instinct, founded by 23-year-old Noah Shinn, is a text-message-based AI agent that can book and rebook travel from a text thread. Available on an invite-only basis, it works via SMS and WhatsApp and has caught Silicon Valley VC attention, demonstrating AI's potential to simplify travel booking.
Perk (formerly TravelPerk) announced it is the first platform to let customers book and manage trips, submit expenses, and create team events from AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT. Its MCP server turns from an insight tool into an action engine, tackling shadow work. Out-of-policy bookings and expenses go to the company's approval flow. Perk Agent for Slack is coming in September.
Expedia Group's AI Trust Gap study found that only 8% of consumers rely on AI chatbots for trip planning, compared to 59% using search engines. Phocuswright research shows 39% of U.S. travelers use AI for travel research and planning, while search engine usage dropped from 51% in late 2024 to 36% in H2 2025. The survey found 53% are comfortable with AI suggesting options, but 66% don't trust AI to book for them, and 57% worry about loss of control and data/payment privacy.
Grab launched 13 AI experiences at its annual product showcase GrabX, with four focused on travel. These include 'Personalized Travel Experience,' hotel booking service GrabStays in partnership with Nuitée, culinary guide 'Discovered by Grab,' and GrabPay for Travel allowing payments with home-issued cards. Grab also partnered with WeRide to bring AV taxis to Singapore.
AI booking faces a trust gap that is both technical and behavioral. OpenAI's Instant Checkout conversions in ChatGPT were three times worse than on Walmart's website, indicating consumer reluctance. Experts say trust doesn't transfer automatically, requiring technological safeguards and behavioral shifts. Payment protocols like ACP and shared payment tokens are emerging, but human authorization remains key.
Kayak's new CEO Peer Bueller and CPO Matthias Keller discuss AI transformation. Kayak AI usage is still single-digit, but users are more likely to search without a destination. They emphasize that agentic booking is more likely in corporate travel, while leisure will take time.
Fliggy, part of Alibaba Group, has launched 'flyai,' a developer-facing travel skill now live on ClawHub and GitHub. Built on Fliggy's Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard, it supports the full travel journey from inspiration to booking, spanning flights, hotels, attractions, ground transport, and more. Fliggy says the tool is plug-and-play, enabling developers to build applications including themed travel products and corporate travel management agents. It is being integrated into the skill stores of major Chinese smartphone manufacturers including Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Honor.
In an ITB Berlin panel, executives from Booking.com, Google, Sabre, and Skyscanner discussed agentic AI in travel. Google's James Byers stressed differences from retail, suggesting autonomous agents may be a year away. Booking.com's James Waters highlighted trust as key: ~90% look forward to gen AI, but only single-digit percentages trust it to make decisions.
