    June 2026 U.S. airline traffic down 1.4% year on year

    U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) data show U.S. airlines carried 87.5 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers in June 2026, down 1.4% year on year and 2.5% below the all-time June high of 89.7 million in 2024. Domestic passengers totalled 75.5 million and international 12 million. Seasonally adjusted, June enplanements fell 0.4% from May and 3.7% below the all-time high reached in June 2024. BTS notes the data may be revised and are statistical observations, not real-time passenger counts.

    EU Commission approves €52 million Romanian State aid scheme

    The European Commission has approved a €52 million (RON 277 million) Romanian State aid scheme to support cattle farmers affected by increased fuel and fertiliser prices stemming from the Middle East crisis. Approved under the Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF) adopted on 29 April 2026, the scheme will run until 31 December 2026 and provide direct grants of up to €50,000 per company. The Commission found the scheme necessary, appropriate and proportionate under EU State aid rules.

From August 2025 to August 2026, the CPI for all transportation goods and services rose 6.2%. Transportation contributed 30.2% to the 3.4% increase in the price of all goods and services.     The European Commission submitted proposals to the Council for the signature and conclusion of the EU-India Free Trade Agreement, seeking authorisation.     EU Commissioner for Consumer Protection McGrath said at a Dublin conference on online safety for children and young people that the Commission will present a Digital Fairness Act (DFA) by the end of this year to close gaps in consumer protection rules for the digital age. The DFA could address dark patterns, misleading influencer marketing, unfair personalisation and personalised pricing, subscription-management difficulties, and drip pricing paired with dynamic pricing, and may consider switching off attention-maximising features by default and prohibiting loot boxes for minors.     U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) data show that U.S. airline industry employment (passenger and cargo combined) fell to 1,037,936 workers in July 2026, down 2,783 (0.27%) from 1,040,719 in June 2026. Scheduled passenger airlines employed 555,559 workers, or 54% of the industry total, losing 1,505 employees in July; cargo airlines employed 477,939 workers, or 46%, losing 1,293, with FedEx down 1,448 jobs. Industry-wide full-time equivalents (FTEs) totaled 892,991, a decrease of 2,289 from June.

    The UK Civil Aviation Authority and the charity Air Ambulances UK have jointly called for an end to laser attacks on air ambulance helicopters during UK Air Ambulance Week. Such attacks occur every month and can cause temporary blindness, distraction and even long-term eye damage to pilots; because most air ambulances operate with a single pilot, the risk is significant and critical patient care can be delayed. There were 94 attacks on emergency helicopters in 2025 and 35 in the first half of 2026. Targeting an aircraft with a laser is a criminal offence carrying up to five years in prison or an unlimited fine.

    IHG Hotels & Resorts signed a Master Development Agreement with Australian developer ALAND, giving ALAND exclusive rights to develop Staybridge Suites in Australia with at least 15 hotels and a minimum of 2,000 rooms. The first two hotels are signed: the 130-room Staybridge Suites Sydney Parramatta and 112-room Staybridge Suites Sydney Leppington, both managed by Signature Hotel Management Group.     US August Transportation PPI: Air Services Up 7.6% Year on Year

    The U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported that the transportation equipment Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 2.6% from August 2025 to August 2026. Over the same 12-month period, transportation services PPI varied by mode: air +7.6%, rail +1.4%, truck +14.3%, water +16.7%, and arrangement of freight and cargo +2.2%. By comparison, all services (transportation and non-transportation) rose 5.1%, with transportation contributing 15.6% to the overall increase in the PPI for all services.
