Booking Holdings Builds Long-Term Advantage With Five Parallel AI Bets

Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel said at Skift Global Forum that the company is running five simultaneous AI bets in a venture-capital style, including consumer agents for Priceline, Agoda and Booking.com plus two native AI startups. He said the technology itself is becoming easy to build, so the real advantage lies in what AI alone cannot provide. Fogel said AI referral traffic currently drives fewer than 1% of room nights at Booking.com, though he expects commerce through AI agents to grow. He also said Airbnb's move into hotels was inevitable and could push home-rental hosts who rely on a single platform to seek additional demand sources.

Uber on Owning More of the Travel Journey and Negotiating With Agents

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said at Skift Global Forum that Uber is in active discussions with basically every agentic company, but on the right terms, using its 10.5 million drivers and couriers across more than 70 countries as leverage. He said no agentic company is going to replicate that content. Khosrowshahi also said 80% of Uber's hotel bookings come from UberOne members, reducing dependence on discovery channels like Google. He noted that Uber's early approach of making AI follow human-agent scripts was limiting, and giving AI a goal and a budget produced better outcomes at lower cost.

Hospitality Technology reports that travel infrastructure provider Entravel Group recently raised $7.5 million to expand its white-label API framework into traditional hotel distribution. Founder and CEO Mathias Lundoe Nielsen said AI agents booking via MCP cannot interpret vague room descriptions or inconsistent inventory the way humans do, which can lead to misbookings or thousands of continuous search queries hammering a CRS. Stablecoins can enable round-the-clock cross-border B2B settlement, though conversion and cust…

BTIG Estimate: Booking Leads Expedia in B2B Room Nights

BTIG analyst Jake Fuller estimates Booking Holdings' B2B business booked ~196 million room nights over the past 12 months, about 15% more than Expedia's ~170 million. Since Booking doesn't disclose B2B financials, the industry assumed Expedia led. However, the estimate is sensitive to assumptions; minor changes could put Booking below Expedia. Expedia's B2B is growing faster (high-teens vs. high-single digits) and offers more robust white-label products. Booking plans to consolidate its three B2B units in early 2027, potentially leading to clearer disclosure.

What Hotelbeds' Shrinking Margins Mean for Hotel Distribution

HBX Group, parent of Hotelbeds, the world's largest independent hotel bed bank, expects flat-to-lower revenue and declining adjusted EBITDA despite adding over EUR 1 billion in travel volume this year. The core issue is take-rate compression: the spread per booking dropped from a 9% prospectus assumption to 7.3% in Q3 FY2026, the lowest since listing. Drivers include a shift to lower-margin third-party supply and OTA channels, partner margin pressure, the Middle East conflict (a roughly 3-point growth drag), and rising fintech penetration. Structurally, with Expedia, Booking, WebBeds, TBO, and RateHawk all offering inventory via APIs, access to hotel rooms is no longer the moat it once was.…

How hotels can adapt to the evolving AI search landscape

As travelers increasingly use artificial intelligence for trip planning, hotels must consider impacts on visibility and distribution strategy, writes Operto CEO Tim Major. Travelers describe trips in terms of mood, purpose, and experience, and AI turns that into a shortlist almost instantly. In the traditional search model, signals like rankings, impressions, and click-through rates were visible; in the age of AI, that visibility disappears. Hotels are being judged in a system they can't observe. Vague positioning gets filtered out; a hotel clearly designed for a specific guest type becomes easier to match. AI introduces a new kind of intermediary that shapes demand. If a hotel is mischarac…
