Bangkok Floods Disrupt Airport Operations, Hotel Bookings Spared for Now

Bangkok experienced sustained heavy rainfall from Thursday through the weekend, with nearly 300 millimeters (12 inches) of rain. Flooding disrupted operations at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, causing flight delays and baggage backlogs, though both airports remained open. Flooded roads prevented some Thai Airways ground-handling employees from reaching the airport, worsening departure delays. Bangkok hotels reported limited impact on bookings. The Thai Meteorological Department forecasts heavy rain across up to 80% of the area in the coming week. A Rangsit University study estimated Bangkok economic losses at 10.6 billion baht ($315 million), over 40% of the estimated 25.3 billion ba…

He also said Hyatt's leisure mix rose from about 35% in 2017 to closer to 55% by 2025, driven in part by the $2.7 billion acquisition of Apple Leisure Group during COVID.

BRICS Summit Pushes Delhi Hotel Rates Up 4x as Room Supply Tightens

Hotel rates in central Delhi are surging ahead of the BRICS Summit (September 12-13), with properties near the Bharat Mandapam venue charging between 124% and 323% more than the following weekend's rates, according to MakeMyTrip listings. The spike is driven by a structural mismatch: central Delhi has a finite pool of five-star keys, and security protocols plus VIP delegation logistics concentrate demand in specific areas like Chanakyapuri and Connaught Place, making newer inventory in Aerocity a secondary option. Leading luxury hotels including Taj Palace, ITC Maurya, The Oberoi, The Imperial, and The Leela Palace are effectively sold out. The event coincides with an already strong Septemb…

Africa's Next Tourism Boom Will Be Won in the Mid-Market

Global travel demand remains resilient but is shifting toward value, exposing a 'missing middle' between budget and luxury that is especially acute in Africa. While Africa's hotel pipeline reached nearly 124,000 rooms in early 2026, growth is concentrated in upscale and luxury segments, leaving professionally managed mid-market supply badly underpenetrated. According to Millat Group CEO Hamza Farooqui and other industry leaders, the continent's core challenge is not demand—Africa was the world's fastest-growing tourism region in 2025 with international arrivals up 8% to 81 million, backed by a large, young, and growing middle class—but a 'broken architecture' of disconnected accommodations,…

For Abu Dhabi, the confirmed Grand Prix is a significant tourism and hospitality catalyst: race-week hotel occupancy hit 93% in both 2022 and 2025, but average daily rates soared roughly 80% (from ~$500 to ~$900, versus ~$200 off-peak). Revenue would fund visitor insurance, infrastructure, secondary-city development, environmental restoration, and more.
